Maartje Verdiesen

Senior Pelvic Health and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist

Special interest in Women’s & Men’s Health and Musculoskeletal Conditions

Maartje is a Dutch-trained physio who holds a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (Avans University of Applied Sciences, 2001) and a post-grad degree in Manual Therapy and Manipulative Techniques (SOMT, 2005)

While starting her physio career at a private practice in The Netherlands and simultaneously pursuing her 4-year post-grad degree, Maartje gained thorough and specialised knowledge and skills in assessing and treating a wide range of conditions affecting the spine and associated structures, such as disc degeneration, bulging & herniated discs, sciatica, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylosis & spondylolisthesis, whiplash, muscle strains, pinched nerves, shoulder pain, hip pain, sacro-iliac joint dysfunction and coccydynia (tailbone pain), just to name a few.

In 2008, Maartje embarked on her Asian journey which started in China, followed by moving to Singapore in 2012.

Over the years Maartje has treated patients with a wide range of orthopaedic and sports-related issues, with her main area of expertise in treating spinal conditions such as neck & back pain. She began to increasingly see that it’s not only the spine and its surrounding tissues that can cause problems, but often the neighbouring muscles and joints play a significant role as well.

To be able to offer the best possible treatment for her patients, Maartje continued her search to further her knowledge base. This led her to become certified in dry needling and further her treatment skills to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues. The TMJ is very often related to neck pain, headaches and funnily enough there is a connection between the TMJ and the pelvic floor as well!

Following her move to Australia in 2018, Maartje started extensive training in the field of women’s health and pelvic floor physiotherapy which completed the full circle for her.

She treats a wide variety of pelvic floor conditions across both men and women, such as urinary & bowel incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, vaginismus, pre- and postnatal care, diastasis rectus abdominus (DRA), recovery after endometriosis surgery, recovery after prostate surgery, erectile dysfunction and more.

Maartje looks at her patients and their health conditions in a holistic way, combining her knowledge and expertise in both pelvic health and spinal/musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

After a 5-year hiatus, it was time to move back to Singapore, the place Maartje happily calls home, so in 2023 she joined the team at Physio Down Under.

She continues her professional development by attending courses whenever she finds an interesting one, such as for example dry needling for treating pelvic floor issues.

Her most recent training has been in the area of scar management. Maartje has completed different courses and she treats all different kind of scars, including C-section scars and surgical scars. She uses a wide range of treatment options, including dry needling, kinesio-taping, cupping and specific scar tissue release & stretch techniques.

Maartje is a registered physiotherapist with the Allied Health Professions Council of Singapore, the Royal Dutch Society of Physical Therapy of The Netherlands and the Physiotherapy Board of both Australia and New Zealand.

She is fluent in English and Dutch, and speaks a bit of German as well.
