Pilates

Pilates

Pilates is a method of exercises aimed at strengthening and stretching the body in a balanced way, with an emphasis on core strength to improve gaeneral fitness and wellbeing. It was developed by German-born, Joseph Pilates, who realised through his personal experience that mental and physical health went hand in hand. Joseph Pilates immigrated to the US in the 1920s and opened a studio in New York, where for several decades he taught his method, called ‘Contrology’.

Pilates exercises are done on a mat or using special equipment, such as the Reformer, Cadillac and Chair. The equipment has a system of pulleys and springs, handles and straps, which can provide either resistance and/or support, depending on the individual’s needs.

Regular and consistent practice of pilates, taught by well-trained instructors, can help improve the following:

  • Posture
  • Muscle tone
  • Balance
  • Joint mobility
  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Stress and tension
