Pilates is a method of exercises aimed at strengthening and stretching the body in a balanced way, with an emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing. It was developed by German-born, Joseph Pilates, who realised through his personal experience that mental and physical health went hand in hand. Joseph Pilates immigrated to the US in the 1920s and opened a studio in New York, where for several decades he taught his method, called ‘Contrology’.

Pilates exercises are done on a mat or using special equipment, such as the Reformer, Cadillac and Chair. The equipment has a system of pulleys and springs, handles and straps, which can provide either resistance and/or support, depending on the individual’s needs.

Regular and consistent practice of Pilates, taught by well-trained instructors, can help improve the following:

  • Posture
  • Muscle tone
  • Balance
  • Joint mobility
  • Strength 
  • Flexibility
  • Stress and tension

In pelvic health, Pilates-based exercises can help women, men and children improve and/or manage conditions such as: 

  • Incontinence
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Pelvic girdle pain (pre and postnatal)
  • Back pain (pre and postnatal)
  • Abdominal muscle weakness/separation (Diastasis Recti)
  • Post surgical stiffness and weakness (Abdominoplasty, hysterectomy, prolapse repair, mastectomy, prostatectomy, hernia repair)

At Physio Down Under, clients have access to specialist physiotherapy assessment of their posture, movements as well as their pelvic floor and abdominal muscle function. We pride ourselves in offering a seamless journey for women, men and children into a Pilates program, if they wish to do so. Our Pilates instructors have specific training in pelvic health conditions and receive further in-house supervision and mentorship.

Group Reformer Pilates Classes

Clinical Pilates

Clinical Pilates is a patient specific modification of Pilates, adapted for therapeutic use by physiotherapists. Unlike regular Pilates, clinical Pilates is a physiotherapy treatment and considers the patient’s specific needs for their body, injury, and condition. Each program will be unique to the individual as the exercises will be specifically picked depending on the injury

Duet Sessions

Enjoy the benefits of Pilates with a friend or partner in our duet sessions. These sessions provide a fun and engaging way to work out together while still receiving personalised instruction and guidance from our experienced trainers.

What if I prefer to book a private Pilates class?

If group classes are not your thing we also have one-on-one Pilates sessions as well as duet and trio sessions. One-on-one sessions can be booked via booking app or by contacting our friendly front desk team. Duet, Trio and Clinical Pilates sessions can only be booked via our front desk team. Please note that Clinical Pilates is exclusively conducted by an experienced and registered physiotherapist, who assesses and treats dysfunctions with tailored exercises using the Pilates method and equipment.

 How much are your group classes, private sessions and Clinical Pilates?

For all Pilates group and private sessions please have a look at the different option on the OClass Ignite app as there are different pricing options depending on the different packages available. All clinical Pilates sessions are led by one of our AHPC registered physiotherapists and all bookings can be done here.
